Concord University Celebrates Homecoming 2009

ATHENS, W.Va. - The temperature hovered in the chilly range but that didn’t stop the excitement from radiating during Concord University’s Homecoming 2009 celebration Saturday, Oct. 17. A 4 p.m. kickoff on June Shott Field at Callaghan Stadium pitted Concord against the Seton Hill Griffins. The Mountain Lions roared a loud and clear 52-34 homecoming victory at the final buzzer.

Alpha Sigma Alpha, one of Concord's national sororities, sent twelve of its members to Parkersburg, WV on November 14-15 to volunteer for the Special Olympics. "I had no idea sororities did anything besides the partying that you see on TV. I am glad to see you girls out here," a fellow volunteer commented after seeing the involvement the sorority offered. The special Olympics is one of Alpha Sigma Alpha's philanthropies, and this trip was a continuation of a long standing tradition.

The Work began as soon as the girls arrived in Parkersburg. Without even topping at their hotel first, they went to a local high school where dinner for the Special Olympics participants was being held. The girls lent a hand wherever they were needed, from serving drinks to restocking silverware to sweeping and mopping the floors. After four hours they retired for the day.

On Saturday, the sorority returned to volunteer at 8:30 a.m. This time they were helping oversee a bowling event. The coaches were not allowed on the floor with the athletes, so the girls were there to encourage the players and remind them when it was their turn. In addition to this they also recorded their final scores and reported them back to the officials. They stayed until 3:30 that afternoon.

"Being a volunteer at the Special Olympics was an amazing experience. It was so heartwarming to see those children get so excited about their accomplishments. I can't wait to go back. " said Kelsey Johnson, an Alpha Sigma Alpha member, about her participation in the event.

Volunteering at the Special Olympics can change the lives of both the volunteer and the athletes that are involved. For more information on how to volunteer or sign someone up to become a Special Olympics athlete visit www.specialolympics.org.
